The Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival® stands as a distinctive platform, showcasing contemporary Asian cinema and the creative endeavors of the Asian diaspora. Curated works encompass films and videos crafted by Asian-identifying artists from Canada, the U.S., Asia, and across the globe. As the most prominent Asian film festival in Canada, Reel Asian® serves as a vibrant public forum, amplifying the voices of Asian media artists and contributing to the flourishing appreciation of Asian cinema in the country.
Established in 1997 by producer Anita Lee and journalist Andrew Sun, this non-profit community-based Festival has evolved into a highly anticipated annual event, drawing thousands of attendees to immerse themselves in 10 days of galas, screenings, forums, workshops, and parties.
Beyond its role as a cultural celebration, Reel Asian is a not-for-profit charitable organization dedicated to advocating for Asian representation through media arts. As a proud Independent Media Arts Alliance member, Reel Asian is committed to ensuring fair compensation by providing industry-standard artist fees to artists, filmmakers, and curators across all its initiatives.
Programming Statement
Reel Asian fully supports Asian media artists who contribute as board members, staff, contractors, and volunteers. To uphold fairness, these artists can submit work to the Festival but do not influence programming or scheduling decisions. Eligible for prizes, their submissions undergo impartial adjudication by independent juries, ensuring transparency and integrity.
